Trainer Sues the Indiana Horse Racing Commission Alleging Defamation

According to a recent article on insideindianabusiness.com, a top Quarter Horse racing trainer, Randy Smith, is suing the Indiana Horse Racing Commission for defamation. Smith claims his 90-day license suspension was unwarranted, stemming from a race cancellation he says he was wrongly blamed for. An administrative law judge initially sided with Smith, granting a stay on the suspension. However, the commission allegedly continued to claim Smith was suspended, which Smith asserts lead to further reputational and financial damage. Smith’s lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, alleging the commission acted with malice due to his past racing success. At the time the article was published, the commission had yet to officially respond to the lawsuit.

The legal process is ongoing. Whether Smith’s suit will succeed or if it has implications beyond the state of Indiana remains to be seen.
